1986年から95年にかけて日本に滞在、その後ACCの招きで1995年にニューヨークに活動の拠点を移す。1993年に行なった｢万里の長城を一万メートル延長するプロジェクト｣など古代中国の発明である火薬と導火線を用いた大規模な屋外プロジェクトで注目を集める。また漢方薬や風水など中国の伝統文化を彼独自のしなやかな批判精神をこめて、現代美術の言語に置き換える作品を制作しつづけている。
国際展：ヴェニス・ビエンナーレ（95年｢トランスカルチャー｣展ベネッセ賞、97年｢アペルト｣展、99年国際賞受賞）96年サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、97年イスタンブール・ビエンナーレ、98年台北ビエンナーレに参加。
日本では、90年大阪府立現代美術センター、92年かわさきIBM市民文化ギャラリー、94年世田谷美術館、いわき市立美術館等個展。95年日本文化デザイン賞受賞、97年第一回岐阜県織部賞受賞。

Lives and works in the United States.
Cai lived in Japan from 1986 to 1995 and then,
at the invitation of the ACC, moved his base to
New York. He first attracted international attention
for his Project to Add 10,000 Meters to the Great
Wall of China, a large-scale outdoor project in
which he set off a line of explosives, originally
invented in China, with a long fuse. He has continued
making art that incorporates traditional elements
of Chinese culture such as geomancy (fengshui)
and herbal medicine, transposing them into the
language of contemporary art and infusing the
work with his own resilient and critical intelligence.

Prize, 1999), Sao Paulo Biennial, Istanbul Biennale,
1997, Taipei Biennale, 1998.
