	作者略歴 Brief record	神戸に生まれ､大阪の美術専門学校を卒業した後、米国へ渡り、サンフランシスコ美術大学を卒業､帰国して神戸港の船で働く。その後もブラジル､フランス､オランダ､米国などの海辺の町を中心に旅行､滞在を続けながら作品を制作している、きわめてユニークなアーティストである。制作途上で､また展覧会場で、その場にいる人や観客は島袋とのコミュニケーションを展開し、作品に参加していく。 また、島袋はしばしば土地の歴史を読み解いて、そこから現実にあった物語を読み直したり、あるいは非現実的でユーモラスな新しい物語を作りだす。トリエンナーレでは、会場のある横浜を港町と位置づけ、そこから、船の旅を紡ぎ出し､ひとつの物語として構成していくというプロジェクトを予定している。 Born in Japan in 1969. Lives and works in Japan. Shimabuku was born in Kobe. He studied at an art school in Osaka. He then went to the United States and studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute. After completing his degree, he came back to Japan and began working on a ship at Kobe. Sometime after that, Shimabuku set out to travel around the coasts of the world. He has been making artworks while traveling in Brazil, France, the Netherlands and the United States. He communicates with people who have just passed by when he is working on a piece or with viewers at an exhibition hall. These people are invited to participate in his works. When he visits a port town, Shimabuku often studies the history of the town and retells true stories in the history or makes up unrealistic and humorous stories. At the YOKOHAMA 2001, he will weave a story about a voyage set in the port city Yokohama.
