1929年日本生まれ。現在日本在住。
幼少時にみた幻覚へのオブセッションから絵画を描き始め、1958年に渡米、16年間ニューヨークに滞在。ヨーロッパのゼロ・グループやヌルなど60年代の最先端のアートシーンにも参加。画面に限りなく増殖し密集した斑点や網目のペインティング、周囲を埋めつくす男根状突起物のソフト・スカルプチャーやミラー・ルーム等インスタレーションの作品をはじめ、小説、詩などの執筆においても才能を発揮している。
国際展：93年ヴェニス・ビエンナーレ日本代表、98年台北ビエンナーレ、2000年シドニー・ビエンナーレに参加。
アメリカを巡回した回顧展に引き続き、99年東京都現代美術館において大規模な個展を開催。

1929.Lives and works in Japan.
Kusama suffered from obsessions and hallucinations
in her youth and incorporated them in her paintings
when she began making art. She moved to the
United States in 1958, remaining in New York
for 16 years. She was anactive participant in
the radical avant-garde scene of the sixties,
participating in the Group Zero and Nul exhibitions
in Europe. This multi-talented artist has expressed
herself in paintings with dense, proliferating
polka-dot and net patterns, soft sculptures
made by covering objects with stuffed cloth
phallic forms, mirror rooms and other installations,
and in novels and poetry.
International exhibitions:
Japanese representative at the Venice Biennale,
1993, Taipei Biennale, 1998, Sidney Biennale,
2000.
Major retrospective in the United States followed
by a large-scale solo exhibition at the Museum
of Contemporary Art, Tokyo in 1999.
