Chun Yin Rainbow Chan, whose work Fruit Song No. 2 is exhibited at the Motomachi-Chūkagai Station Accessway, will perform live in Chinatown.
The artist, who has roots in Hong Kong’s first settlers from Southern China, started a project in recovering the lost oral tradition of the Weitou women in 2017. This performance accompanies her exhibited work, in which she revives in a modern way a traditional song in of a bride lamenting over her separation from her family at her wedding, using the metaphor of fruits.
The venue of this event is community center in Yokohama’s Chinatown, which is run by a women’s association founded in 1953 to support the children of the Chinese immigrants and promote independence of the women in the community. Chan’s performance will inspire the audience to imagine the lives of women in Hong Kong and Yokohama who had to leave their families and homes to start new lives.
