Hayes is known as an artist with a conceptual style that uses language as her principal subject material. She has developed her work including performance, video, and installations around themes like the relation between the group and the individual, fiction and fact, and past and present. In 2007 she presented an solo exhibition in the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York entitled I march in the parade of liberty, but as long as I love you I'm not free.
